Using 3D Storyboards to Streamline the Animation Process

From storyboards to final frames, we use 3D to bring efficiency and impact to every step of animation.

When people think of animation, they often picture a neat assembly line: sketches, storyboards, style frames, and the final big render. But real projects rarely move in neat lines. Deadlines tighten, clients want visibility earlier, and teams are often balancing multiple projects at once. At Mertz Design Studio, we’ve found a better way forward: building every stage of the process inside 3D.

A recent project with Champro, a sportswear company redefining protective gear, put this approach to work. They needed a bold way to showcase their new helmet designs—something cinematic enough to inspire athletes but detailed enough to highlight the innovation behind the product.

Instead of starting with pen-and-paper sketches, we built 3D storyboards directly in Cinema4D and Blender. By blending client-supplied assets with custom textures, the boards had the sketch-like energy of traditional drawings but with total control over space, lighting, and perspective from the very beginning.

From there, the rest of the process flowed seamlessly. With scenes already built in 3D, style frames and animatics became less about rebuilding and more about refining. Camera shifts, mograph explorations, and lighting tests happened in real time. Quick animatic renders gave Champro instant clarity, while layered passes in After Effects meant revisions could be made without the pain of restarting final renders.

The payoff? Cinematic, photorealistic animations that didn’t just show helmets—they told a story of variety, safety, and performance. For Champro, it was a fresh lens on product storytelling. For us, it proved a larger point: 3D isn’t just a finishing tool. It’s the foundation.
