From Student to Professional
How Work Life Redefines Deadlines and Priorities
After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Industrial Design, I recently joined Mertz Design Studio as a Junior Industrial Designer. Transitioning from student life to full-time work has been both exciting and eye opening. While the creative process remains familiar, the way I manage time and projects has changed dramatically.
Deadlines
In school, deadlines are clearly defined from day one. Professors outline expectations early, and timelines rarely shift. This structure makes it easier to plan, iterate, and deliver on time.
In professional practice, deadlines are far more dynamic. At Mertz, project timelines are influenced by client needs, team feedback, and business priorities. A client might request an accelerated delivery, or a design round could be extended for further refinement. Adapting to these changes has taught me the importance of flexibility and communication.
Project Management
As a student, I could devote most of my attention to one major project at a time. In contrast, consultancy work means balancing several projects simultaneously each with its own goals, materials, and client expectations. Managing that workload requires careful organization and the ability to shift focus without losing momentum.
Key Takeaway
Moving from student to professional means learning to thrive amid shifting priorities. It’s about balancing structure with adaptability and maintaining quality under real world pressures. The learning curve is steep, but having a team that supports you and helps you grow is what makes Mertz special!
